About Us
HISTORY
Department of Physics was initiated in 1989 as a separate department. It was a result of several reorganizations of 'The Department of Physics and Mathematics' which was founded in 1926 along with the School of Mines. Excellence in research and teaching has always been a hallmark of the department.
ACADEMICS
The department currently offers various academic programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level which include, the undergraduate program of B. Tech in Engineering Physics, graduate program of Master of Science in Physics, and Ph.D. in Physics. In addition to these programs, we regularly offer several core and elective physics courses to the engineering and science students from all the other Departments of the Institute.
RESEARCH
The department is actively involved in research across frontier areas of Physics that involve both fundamental and applied sciences including interdisciplinary avenues. We perform active research spanning the complexities of space and time, light-matter interactions, and the world of quantum information, interactions and materials. The broad areas of research include Solid state physics, Thin film science and technology, Mineral physics, Biomedical physics, Nano science, Fiber optics, Theoretical physics and Atomic, molecular and laser physics. More details can be found on our faculty webpages.
FROM THE HOD'S DESK ...
Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Visitors,
I am pleased to welcome you to the department's website and extend my warmest greetings to all of you. As the head of the department, I have the honor of leading a group of dedicated and passionate physicists who want to push the limits of knowledge in this exciting field. Our department has a distinguished history of excellence in teaching and research dating back to decades. We are committed to maintaining and building upon this legacy, and to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where students and faculty can thrive.
Our department offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate courses, covering topics such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and astrophysics, among others. We believe in providing our students with a strong foundation in both theoretical and experimental aspects of physics and inculcating in them a passion for scientific inquiry. At the undergraduate level, we offer B.Tech. in Engineering Physics program , a comprehensive and rigorous physics course that prepares students for a wide range of careers in academia, industry, and beyond. Our graduate program ( M.Sc. in Physics ) and its curriculum are designed to provide a strong foundation in the fundamentals of physics, while also allowing students to specialize in areas of their choice. Our programs also put a lot of emphasis on developing skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication that are important in any career. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to explore their interests and pursue their own research projects.
Our department is a center for research and education, and we try to make it a place that encourages people to be curious, creative, and work together. Our professors are leaders in their fields, and they bring their different experiences and points of view to the classroom, the lab, and the scientific community as a whole. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities, including advanced experimental setups, computational resources, and access to national and international collaborations. Our professors do research in many different fields, including condensed matter physics, atomic molecular and optical physics, high-energy physics, and more. Currently, we have about 75 research scholars pursuing Ph.D. degrees in various advanced fields of research.
We are proud of our collaborations with other departments and institutions, and we are always looking for new opportunities to expand our research portfolio. We are also committed to engaging with the broader public and communicating the excitement and relevance of physics to society at large.
I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our department, our faculty and staff, our programs and research, and our events and activities. I also encourage you to reach out to us if you have any questions or if you are interested in joining our community. I am confident that you will find our department to be a vibrant and exciting place to pursue your academic and professional goals.
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Physics, and I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Prof. B. K. Antony
